Hello friends, thanks for joining me and the NC Deep Dive. I am your host, Amanda Benbow-Lunn, and we are delving into the 2024 primary election. Each episode will cover a different race that will be on your primary ballot this election. When you go to vote, you will be handed a ballot based on your address and party affiliation. If you are unaffiliated sometimes also referred here as independent then you will have your choice of which party's ballot you would like to vote. Please note that you are only able to cast one ballot and that there are no primary ballots for the Green Party or the no Labels Party. Moreover, candidates for the general election in November who do not have a primary challenger will not appear on your primary ballot. They get a pass directly to the general election. Due to time constraints and the plethora of candidates, and my belief that having as much information as possible is of vast importance, our primary election segment will consist of me covering one race at a time, as time allows, and going over each candidate's website and what I can find on a simple Google search, in case it is easier for you to take in information this way. In this episode we will be delving into the North Carolina Superintendent of Public Instruction for the Democratic Ballot. There will be three candidates for this race and you are eligible to vote for one of them. The three candidates are CR Katie Eddings, maurice Mo Green and Kenon Crumble. That brings us to CR Katie Eddings, who goes by Katie for NC State Superintendent. Her website is eddings4education. com and that four is spelled out. Katie Eddings' inspiration for teaching is her mother, who was an exceptional children's teacher's, aide, bus driver and library assistant in the 1960s. Her love and concern for his students created lifelong relationships. Throughout her teaching career, katie graduated from Pembroke Senior High in Pembroke, north Carolina, before earning an associate's degree in police science from Robeson Community College. She then joined the Air Force and served during Desert Storm. She later received a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Nevada, las Vegas and a Master of School Administration from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke.

Katie's teaching career began in 2004 in Robeson County Public Schools. She served as a social studies teacher and an assistant principal. However, she found that she missed the classroom and became an advancement via individual determination elective teacher with Lee County High School. Currently, she is teaching personal finance at Lee Early College. During the 2007-2018 school year, katie was chosen as the Avid Summer Institute Teacher Speaker in Orlando, florida, where she spoke to 2,500 educators from around the United States and the world. In 2019, she was named Lee County Schools Teacher of the Year, which led her to being chosen as the 2019 Boroughs Welcome Fund North Central Region Teacher of the Year. She was also selected as the 2019 Lee County NAACP Educator of the Year. In 2022, katie was able to travel to Australia through GO Global, supported by Sanford Rotary and Lee County Schools. While there, she participated in Immersive Cultural and Educational Professional Development, with an emphasis on equitable access to education for Aboriginal and Indigenous children. Katie believes her greatest accomplishment is seeing her students reach their potential and find their passion both in the classroom and throughout the lives, just as her mother did. Teacher retention the days of wishing we could pay teachers more are a thing of the past, because higher pay is not a luxury. We are in a staffing crisis. We need to offer competitive salaries, reinstate lost benefits and treat teachers as professionals. All are critical to retaining our most talented educators. Teacher recruitment we need to make teacher profession more attractive. We cannot recruit when the UNC system has seen a drop in college enrollment in the field of education. We need to bring back retirement benefits for new hires and increase the starting salary to prevent new teachers from working second jobs to pay their bills. Competitive pay structure. Students and teachers deserve more than a salary increase that barely matches the rate of inflation. We need a true and competitive pay structure so experienced educators no longer have to make financial sacrifices to support our students and teachers can afford to keep teaching. School safety we must be proactive in our approach to school safety. Ongoing assessments and conversations with local law enforcement and school-based officers are imperative to protecting students. We need to practice drills often, train everyone and communicate expectations daily. Mental health support emotional and mental health professionals should be available for every single school to support all students' needs.

Under her media tab it says there are a few different news articles. The titles are Eddings Get Support in Run for Top State Education Post. The Sanford Herald. Lee Teacher announces bid for state superintendent. The rant A Day of Prayer Eddings keynote speaker the Sanford Herald. There's also a video of Katie at Avid Summer Institute in 2018. And that is the totality of her website. Looking her up on ballotpedia, she did not complete ballotpedia's 2024 candidate connection survey. Nor did she respond in my attempts to reach her regarding the North Carolina Voters Guide that we put together. Her campaign finance information for the 2024 election cycle was unavailable on ballotpedia as of January 31st 2024. And when I tried to look it up, I didn't see anything there either. Doing a general Google search, I did not find anything out of the ordinary.

Switching to Maurice Mo Green, he goes by Mo Green. His website is MoGreenforNC. com and that for is spelled out F-O-R. It says elect a champion for NC public schools and students Moe Green for North Carolina superintendent of public instruction. There is a spot where you can fill out information to join his team Mo Green for superintendent of public instruction. North Carolina's future is in our schools today and you have the ability to chip in with a donation if you would like Mo's Pillars. Invest fully in public education. Prepare each student for their next phase in life. Revere public school educators, enhance parent and community support. Ensure safe, secure learning environments. Celebrate the good in public education.

Education leaders from across North Carolina endorse Mo Green, and they include Jim Hunt, the 69th and 71st governor of North Carolina, bev Perdue, the 73rd governor of North Carolina, and June Atkinson, former North Carolina superintendent of public instruction. He's also been endorsed by NCAE, the North Carolina Association of Educators, nc State AFL CIO, young Democrats of North Carolina, the Durham Committee on the Affairs of Black People PAC. Other endorsements include Bill McNeil, former national superintendent of the year, and Bill Harrison, former chair of the NC Board of Education. Other organizations that have given their endorsement include the George C Simkins Memorial PAC, people's Alliance, sierra Club, former and current members of Congress, including Congresswoman Alma Adams, former Congressman GK Butterfield, congresswoman Kathy Manning and Congresswoman Deborah Ross, former district superintendents Tony Baldwin, del Burns, Jim Cosby, terry Klein, larry Kobel, beverly Emery, peter Gorman, carl Harris, bill Harrison, robert Logan, tim Marley, james Merrill, bill Miller and Ray Spain. There is a section where you can endorse Moe if you feel so moved, there are buttons where you can donate, volunteer and join his campaign.

Maurice Mo Green has strived to be a champion for public education in North Carolina throughout a professional career that has included being a school district superintendent, a chief executive for a large foundation that awards grants supporting public education and a school board attorney. Mo served as the executive director of the Z Smith Reynolds Foundation from 2016 to 2023. Prior to ZSR, mo served more than seven years as superintendent of Guilford County schools, the third largest district in North Carolina Before Guilford County schools. Mo joined Charlotte Mecklenburg schools in 2001 as general counsel. In 2006, he was named chief operating officer and later moved into the role of deputy superintendent. Mo began his career as a lawyer in a private practice after doing two United States judicial clerkships. He has a bachelor's degree in political science and economics and a law degree both from Duke University.

Looking at his ballot pedia, it said as of 2024, green was affiliated with the following organizations the Hunt Institute. Hunt Lee Commission. My Future NC. The Path Forward Education NC Education Commission of the States. National Center on Learning and Civic Engagement. North Carolina High School Athletic Association. High Point University School of Education Doctoral Advisory Board, guilford County. Guilford Education Alliance. Digital Learning Institute. Crisis Assistance Ministry, university of North Carolina at Asheville. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated. Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity Incorporated. Looking at his campaign finance information, there was nothing listed for the 2024 election cycle and when I looked it up, I did not see anything either. He did answer ballot pedia's candidate connection survey. There are approximately seven questions here If you would like to look into more information. Looking at Mo Green on Google, I found a couple of articles of interest, one of which was entitled Honoring Maurice Mo Green by supporting students in Guilford County, and it states former Z Smith Reynolds Foundation Executive Director.

Maurice Mo Green is known statewide as a champion of public education. In 2015, when Green transitioned from his role as superintendent of Guilford County schools to ZSR, guilford County community members established a scholarship fund through local nonprofit Shift underscore ed in recognition of his work. Now, eight years after the Maurice Mo Green endowed fund for Shifted was first established, csr is donating $425,000 to the fund in honor of Green's years of dedicated service to the foundation. Green chose Shift ed to receive the honorarium because he considers it a game changer for students and family in Guilford County. During my time as superintendent, he says I encountered many families who couldn't envision an educational future for their kids beyond high school simply because of cost. Shift ed's all encompassing approach to supporting students, from tutoring to last dollar tuition scholarships, helps students and families see that anything is possible. Shift ed president and CEO, wendy Poteet, calls Green a visionary. It was thanks to his foresight and persistence that Shift ed came to exist in Guilford County. She says. To transform our community means accelerating outcomes for our students so they can fill critical roles in our workforce. Mo understood that and assembled change makers from across the county to make it happen. This gift underscores his commitment to students, families and our entire community.

Green led Guilford County schools for more than seven years, completing the district's first ever strategic plan and launching a second, both of which have resulted in notable outcomes, such as increased graduation rates and other impressive student achievements, both academic and non-academic. In 2016, green took the leadership role at CSR and served for nearly seven years. In that time, the foundation launched all four NC, our current framework for grant making and learning. Green considers the donation from CSR humbling. It is an honor not only for me, but also for my entire family to know that these resources will enable students in Guilford County to continue their educational journeys beyond high school graduation. He says knowing that we are helping to break down financial barriers and open doors for the next generation of leaders is truly humbling and deeply gratifying. Superintendent receives a Thurgood Marshall Award Recognizing his work and dedication to helping every student in Guilford County graduate from high school ready for career, college and life. The welfare reform liaison project awarded Superintendent Maurice Mo Green with its Thurgood Marshall 2015 S-THUR award. The awards are given to seven men and women in Guilford County who are committed to building up their cities and communities. The Thurgood Marshall Award specifically recognizes a person who has been a champion of change. In a letter to the superintendent, the project's board of directors cites Green's dedication to the children of Guilford County, passion for education, unceasing work on behalf of the Say yes initiative and relentless efforts for excellence in education. In the seven plus years of Green's leadership, the district has raised its graduation rate, student achievement on test scores and scholarship dollars for graduating seniors. But, just as essential, he has raised expectations for students, employees and parents, while restoring trust and public support of the school district In 2015,. Thanks in part to the fundraising efforts of the Green and thanks in part to the fundraising efforts of Green and the fundraising committee and the work he started in GCS, guilford County was named a Say yes to education community. The designation gives eligible GCS graduates the opportunity to apply for last dollar tuition scholarships to attend any two or four-year public institution in North Carolina.

Mr Green has striven to make education in Guilford County more suited to each child's particular learning needs, said Dr Irish Spencer, president and CEO of the Welfare Reform Liaison Project. Initiatives that he has sponsored or supported include mass reading campaigns, greater access to advanced placement courses and partnering with non-traditional schools to find the right fit for each of our children to learn in their own way. Justice Marshall fought for equal opportunity in America and Mr Green is a worthy successor to his legacy, having fought for equal opportunity for our students and ensuring a fair, effective process for all parents in Guilford County. Guilford County Board of Education member Ed Price received the award last year and says Green is very deserving of the recognition. The Welfare Reform Liaison Project Inc. Isa, faith-based nonprofit community action agency dedicated to providing services that will enable economically disadvantaged individuals and families to move towards self-sufficiency.

Green has received numerous accolades for his work. In 2014, he was named the Distinguished Educator by the NCASCD, the North Carolina Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development. He was also recognized by two community organizations in 2013, including the Education Award presented by the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity and the Public Service Award from the Greensboro Regional Realtors Association. Green currently serves as president of the Board of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association. He also serves on the Board of the National Center for Learning and Civic Engagement, an institute with the Education Commission of the States. In addition, he is a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. And this, it looks like, was in the archives for the 2010 through 2017.

This journey has been one paid with insatiable curiosity, unyielding determination and an unwavering commitment to personal and intellectual growth. As I reflect upon the experiences and choices that have led me to this pivotal moment, I am reminded of the transformative power of education and the infinite possibilities that lie ahead. Yet it was in the agony and suffering of challenges that I discovered my capacity to adapt, learn and innovate. A particularly poignant memory is when I received an IEP in elementary school and subsequently autonomously refused services and tested out. My passion for education emerged as a natural extension of my interests and experiences, because I did not have anything as a child. My father, who is and always will be my hero, did not have much to offer me but wisdom. However, the more I delved into education, the more I realized its profound implications on shaping my future. Michelle Rhee helped me embark upon, not only fortifying my knowledge, but also illuminated the vast potential for innovation and positive change. It was then that the idea of doctoral studies germinated within me, the desire to not only grasp the complexities of this field, but to contribute to its advancement.

Early voting is now going on and will continue through Saturday March 2nd. Our closest early voting locations will be the WE Hunt Center in Holly Springs and the Hilltop Needmore Town Park and Preserve in Fuquay Varina. The main primary election will be held on Tuesday, march 5th. If you vote that day, it's best for you to go to your designated polling place or else some of the races you are eligible to vote for may not show up on the ballot they have available to give you During early voting. Each area in Wake County has all the possible ballots for Wake County Election day. They will only have the ballot that corresponds directly to that particular precinct. Please remember you now need to bring your photo ID. If you happen to forget or have had some extraordinary circumstance happen, you will have a few different options provided to you, but it will be best and easiest and most efficient to bring it with you. If, for some reason, you haven't registered to vote yet, you may register and vote at the same time during early voting at any one of the sites. March 2nd will be the last day to register to vote for this primary election, and that brings this episode of the NC Deep Dive to a close.
